10:45 a.m. — 11:45 a.m. every Wednesday during the summer,
2008 schedule as follows:
July 9, 2008 — Ancient Greek lyrics and odes, from 600-60 BCE, thru the lens of THE GREEK WAY, written by famous Classicist Edith Hamilton, who spent summers on Mackinac Island.
July 16, 2008 — William Blake (1797-1827)-
divine illuminations, this class to be led by islander Dr. James Bogan, who wrote his doctoral dissertation on Blake.
July 23, 2008 —Stephen Crane (1871-1900)-
Crane is most famous for his novel, THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, but is also a poet remarkably “rare and strange,” the greatest between Dickinson and Frost, said John Berryman, and a hero of mine. I am editing a small volume of Crane's poetry to be published next year.
July 30, 2008 — Robert Frost (1874-1963)
We take a revealing visit to his maple-shadowed grave in Bennington, Vermont, a site I have visited. The Frost you think you know is far darker and richer once you follow him into his poetic pasture.
Aug 6, 2008 — Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979)
Famous for her travels, her elegantly crafted poems are a handful of perfect jewels.
August 13, 2008 — James Wright (1927-1980)
This heartbroken Pulitzer Prize winner spins out transformative poems that will illuminate your heart.
August 20, 2008 — Sylvia Plath (1932-1963
